In just 2 days and about 2 hours, we will say goodbye to 2012 and hello to 2013.

In 2012 :

I made two queen size quilts in less than 3 months, both for my mom;
My mom went through breast cancer;
I stopped eating meat and gluten;
My boyfriend and I bought a house and moved together;
And I sewed and sewed again and again (and I must admit I'm a little bit sick of it right now, even if I really want to start something just for me.)
Oh and I (we) survived the end of the world. How awesome is that ?

And I know I made a million other things but those are the only ones I can think about right now.
And I also know I learned a lot about myself. Living with someone, even when you've been together for 5 years isn't always easy. But I guess when life is a little harder, that's when I learn the more about myself. It would be boring if it was always easy anyway.

Let's see what I was able to accomplish this year :

2012 was a good year and I hope 2013 is going to be even better !

p.s : i know some things are missing.. I didn't photograph every single item I made, forgive me.

100Day Hustle - Final Review

The end of the year is almost there so I guess it's time for a little recap of what I've been able to accomplish since September !
My list changed a bit during all this time but this one is my original one.
Let's see...
(and I promise it's the very last time you'll see some of these projects)

1. Finish Green and Brown Supernova  - DONE (Sept 28th)

2. Finish Out to Sea quilt (need to piece the top) - DONE (Nov 20th)

3. Finish Do. Good. Stitches quilt (need to bind it) - DONE

4. Make my sister a quilt and maybe a bag - I made the bag. I ran out of fabric to finish the quilt so I'm currently waiting. I told her she's have it before the beginning of the new semester January 7th.

5. Make my grandmother a quilt for Chistmas - Done (will take pictures tomorrow)
6. Make my mother pillows to match one of her quilts - Not done. Will work on this today maybe.
7. Make Tiffany's pillow (I didn't forget you !) - Done (Nov. 15th) (you can see the pictures on her blog)

8. Make my boyfriend a quilt - Not done and I asked him if he'd be happy if I made him a quilt and he said that since there are already a few here, it wouldn't be that special. SO I'm not going to make him a quilt.

9. Make our bed a quilt with La Dee Da - That's something I decided to remove from the list as I went because I realised it was one of my goals for the new year.. that this list was to help me finish all thoses things that needs to be done before I can work on a quilt for my bed.
10. Catch up with the only QAL I'm in. I haven't even made one single block and it's been 9 weeks already. - Not done and I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. Maybe next year ?
11. I don't know if it counts but I will need to make two things for two swaps before christmas - DONE

And here's a mosaic of everything I made that wasn't on my original list :

All in all, I'm very happy with all I've done ! Even if I wasn't able to accomplish everthing I wanted, I still made a lot in a short time.

A big thank you to Kelsey for keeping me motivated all the way :)

Merry (belated) Christmas !

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas !
Mine was spent in really good company with lot of food, presents and games.

I was able to finish my grandmother's quilt right on time.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to take good pictures but don't worry, I'll go to her house to take some :)

The only one I got is this one :

And right now, there is a snowstorm. We expect about 25cm of snow.
There is plenty of food in the frigde, lentil soup in the crockpot and the laundry is all done for the week.
If I'm not too lazy, I'll clean my sewing room today. If I am, I might stay on the couch watching Vampire Diaries or How I Met Your Mother while eating chocolate all day. I'll let you know :)
I love snowstorms when I don't have to get out of the house.

What are your plans for the day ? Are you already back at work ?

Where are we going ?

I want children. I want to bring (4) little humans into this world.
But when things like what happened in Newtown, I question my desire to have kids.

Because really, do I want to bring innocent soul into this world we live in ?

Obviously, I can't even imagine what these parents are going through but my heart ache for them.
It must be terrible and probably even worse than that.

It's crazy how the world can stop for someone and just keep going for everyone else.
While families where grieving, I was just working and eating and playing with my cats, doing all the things I usually do.

I am not christian or mormon or anything else. But I do believe there is something bigger than me. I do believe there is something before birth and after death. I believe I am on earth to experience things and I believe my soul is choosing to make me experience those things so I can grow.
Otherwise, what's the point ?

And I must remember to believe in humanity. There are more good people than bad ones.

I know there is nothing I can do but oh how I wish there was.
I feel so helpless.

So today, I will sew. And while I do this, I will keep those families in my thougts and send them all my love because today, they probably need it more.

(I know it won't bring those children back, but there is a pillowcase drive for the children that were lucky enough to survive. You can find all the informations here.)

Best mailday of the year (and of all time probably)

Do you remember when I said I was swapping fabric for some handmade goodies ?
Well, yesterday was the day it finally arrived, after two whole weeks of travelling (yes, Post Canada is THAT slow).

I was probably the most excited woman on the entire earth. You probably think I am exagerating but let me show you ok ?

She didn't send me all this.. but there was still a whole FQ set of Good Folks and at least 5-6 Mendocino prints.
Now you understand ?

My goal is now to find a pattern to use these lovely fabrics :)

Oh and I made a little travel sewing kit last night because I wanted to sew really badly and I wanted to actually finish something !

And I would like you help again.
I picked fabric for my grandmother's quilt and I need a solid and I don't know if I like white or grey better. I say grey and my boyfriend says white...

This was my color inspiration :

p.s. : it's time to vote for your favorite Do.Good.Stitches Quilt at Stitched in Colors so if you were feeling particularily nice today, you can always vote for the Happiness circle's quilt. It's the Spiderwebs one.

This weekend

I hope you had a lovely weekend !
Mine was spent mostly at work but on Saturday, I managed to do some homework and sew just a little (I don't have any proof though because I can't show you yet. I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise for a certain someone).

I also decided to move things around in my sewing room (again.. for the third time I think).
I had no more room in my bookcase for more fabric and let's face it, I don't think I'll stop buying fabric anytime soon so I clearly need more room. So I decided to bring back an old table in so I can do homework on this one (she's not old, I've just had her for a few years) and sew on the other table.

I wanted shelves so my boyfriend installed some last night (thank god he can do these kind of things because I hate doing things like that).
Here's what it looks like right now :

Most precious fabric (Mendocino, Good Folks, La Dee Da, Typewritters, Liberty of London, HR Spoonflower/Crafty Chloe)

Oh and I need you help (again).
I talked to my mom about the quilt I want to make for my grandmother and she doesn't seem to like what I was planning so I will change my plan (again).

Here are the 4 quilts I like :

Now I really like the 4th one.. and I hate saying this but before I go with something, I must think about how fast the quilt is going to come together because I need to be done in 15 days.
Usually, I don't mind but since I don't have much time left, it has to come together pretty fast I it would be nice if it wasn't a pain in the ass to piece (like those string blocks in the first 3 quilts).

So what do you think ?

One last thing, if you are interested in a Low Volume charm swap, sign ups are open right now for this one. (open to internationals)

A chevron low volume pillow

I don't know if it's just me but sometimes, when you have do work on something, it's the last thing you want to do. When this happen, there are only two options :

1. I start something new (happens the most often)
2. Work on the project I should be working on

Well today was one of those days. I should have been working on my sister's quilt because I've got to be done before the 25th. Instead, I made Melanie's second pillow.

She wanted low volume and in her profile, she said she liked fall colors so I decided to add a touch of red because I love low volume + red.

If I could start over, I would have cut my stripes thinner and I would have managed to match the prints together. But what is done is done and I still really like it and Melanie does too.

On another subject, I've decided I was going to make a mosaic of everything I made this year and tonight, I decided to count how many quilts and pillows I made so far.

13 Quilts
13 Pillows
and a few other things (like pouches of minis)
It doesn't seem a lot but that's more than one quilt a month (and I still have two to make!)

How about you ?

ps : would any of you would be interested in a Weekender Swap ?
Lee  approched me a few days ago about it and I was wondering if there was some interest. We would keep it small and only accept modern quilters.

WIP Wednesday - The Christmas Edition

I don't have much to show you this week..

I started my sister's quilt a few days ago and that's about all I'm making !

There will be 110 paper pieced units and I made 20 so far.
I really hope I'll stop making mistakes because I don't want to run out of fabric !

That was short and sweet !
Have a good day people xx

Today started well.. I did a bit of sewing this morning. I worked on my sister's quilt, which I'm going to paper piece by the way. But the pieces are 9"x9" and 4.4"x9" so it's not SO bad.

Then I was meeting my team mate because we needed to finish something for my French class. Then we were meeting the teacher.. Well, both our meetings didn't go so well.
I don't like working in a team. I prefer to decide everything and do things my way. And I can't because everybody has to be happy you know ?

So as I was coming back home, I was thinking about this situation and I was really frustrated and I thought "there better be something in the mail for me today!"

And there was.
First, there was this amazing pillow from the Modern She Made Swap.

Sorry for the very bad picture. It's only 4pm and it's already dark outside !

With a gorgeous pouch and some charms from Simply Color.
Doesn't it look good with the pillow I got from the Pillow Talk Swap ?
I love my bed even more now :)

And then I got my order from Fabric.com :)

The feather print will be for a Tova (I couldn't find that flower print from Children at Play).
And the top two AMH prints are for a bag for my partner in the Sew Sew Modern swap.
And everything in the middle.. well it ended up in my shopping cart.. oops !

Can one have too many text prints ?

Bee blocks and other things

December's here, can you believe it ?? Only 24 days left to make my christmas gifts... that's 2 quilts and maybe 4 pillows. In a month. Wish me luck and if you want to help, you're more than welcome !!

First of all, I'll share with you my bee blocks for November and December.

There are 3 here because I covered for someone else.
I must say that I like paper pieced blocks because I know it's going to be the right size, no trimming, nothing. I do love the colors and I think it's going to look gorgeous !

Those two lovelies are my December blocks. I know, I'm fast :)
The thing is that I had to go to the PO so my thought was "I might as well get them done right now or I'll wait until the last minute to make them". And you know, since I hate going tothe PO, they would have waited for a long time in their envelope...

They took me about 2 hours, which is ok I guess. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the colors, the chevrons, everything. I would have kept them. But I know they will be loved by whoever get this quilt.

Next, I want to share with you this awesome blog I found.
Promise me you won't spend the next hour on it ok ?

It's Pintrosity.
There are some really funny things !!

Ok that's about it..
I really need to start those quilts !!
Have a good weekend :)

p.s : I'm going to write that tutorial but don't be too impatient. I won't have time before the holidays are over.
p.s.s : it's Sew, Mama, Sew! Giveaway day on Monday ! Are you excited to spend all your day looking at blogs ?? I am :) I don't know yet if I'll be hosting a giveaway since I'm a little sick to post stuff.. we'll see !

Pouches !

All three are full of fabric and will be on their way to their new home this afternoon !

I'm back. I spent the last 15 minutes trying to find a gadget that would allow me to take a poll but I can't find anything easy to use.. so my question is :

Are you interested in a tutorial for the Somerset Star ?
Yes, maybe or no ?

Because you know, I don't want to spend time on that if 2 people are interested !

C'est l'hiver, c'est l'hiver, c'est l'hiver !

(the title refers to a french christmas song that has been stuck in my head for a few days now)

Earlier today, I was looking at the Hawthorne Threads newsletter and there were a few prints I liked so I ended up on their website. Unfortunately, because of that, I had to add yet another quilt on my to-do list. You see, they have a new "feature" were they will match solids with every collection so it's easier for us to buy coordinating solids (and I LOVE that !) but I saw a color combination that I feel in love with.

This is the collection I was looking at (just the text & music note print).
See the pink/orange/green/grey at the bottom ?

Isn't it lovely ?
I know, the colors are very fresh, which is not what one would expect to see at this time of the year but what can I say ? I love colors. I love fresh, bright, feminine colors.

This is what I found in my stash that matched the colors.
Hopefully, my (first!) pregnant friend will have a baby girl and I will be able to use these lovely fabric for her.. if not, I'm afraid I'll have to make something for me.

Oh and on a completely random subject, I made chicken and rice soup last night and it was GOOD.
Like real good.

In case anybody is interested, here's how I made it :

I cooked 1 chopped onion, 1 cup chopped carrots, 1 cup chopped celery in a bit of olive oil. Then you add some spices (I used thyme, basil and maybe another one but I can't remember). Then add 8-9 cups of chicken broth, 2 cups of cooked chicken (in small pieces) and the rice (2 cups uncooked - mine is a gluten free mix). You let it simmer for 20-25 minutes and then enjoy.
It smells soooo good !

And I made some progress on the Somesert Star pillow I'm working on (in exchange of some Good Folks, you remember ?)

It is still missing 2-3 rows but I'm getting there !

Well, I'm off to making 3 pouches !
Have a good day everyone :)

(I'm linking with Diane today!)

Giveaway Winner !

Well good morning everyone (it's 7 am here) !!
I hope you all had a great weekend and that you did a lot of shopping :) On saturday, I had an unexpected day off (they changed the schedule at work and didn't call me.. I was not happy). I spent the day with my mom, which was nice because since I moved here, I miss her !

The only sewing I did was making some progress on another Somesert Star pillow.
The is the best swap ever. I'm going to get the whole Good Folks collection ! How's that ?
Ok maybe it's the second best one. The first being the swap I made with Tiffany (2 pillows for a lot of Mendocino). You can see what I made her on her blog because her pictures are better than mine.
It's funny because a week ago, I never thought I would even own a print of this collection and now, I'm going to be able to make a quilt !

Anyway, I'm sure you all want to know who the winner is right ?

So Mr. Random decided it would be.... drumroll please !!

Who is ?

Yes, that's right, my MSMS partner !! Who is also the owner of that Flea Market Fancy pillow :)
I can say it now that she has received it !

Congratulations Lori and let me know if you like the book because I've had my eye on it too !! Too bad I can't win :)
Oh and can you send me an email to let me know you're adress ?

Thank you to everyone who participated !
And thank you to everyone who decided to become a follower. I hope you won't be disapointed !

Hi !! So that's me ! I thought I'd show you my face (and white legs) because I love seeing who's talking and just in case you're like me, well now you know :)

There are so many things I could/want to say ! But first, thank you to Carol (from SewSister) who put all this together ! I was really excited when she contacted me and I'm the only one representing Quebec so you know, I've got a bit of pressure on my shoulder to do it well. Kidding. I'm not stressed at all.

So, about me. My name is Marika, but you all know that. I'm 23 and I am studying to become a teacher for children with learning disabilities and I just love what I do right now :) During the weekends, you can always find me working as a waitress in a restaurant called St-Hubert (very popular here. I was told it's a little bit like Swiss Chalet).
I live with my boyfriend of 5 years. In fact, we bought our first house this summer ! I think we're getting used to living together. It's not perfect, but we're going well :) I also have two cats that I love. If you're already been here, you know that but just in case, I'll show you a picture of them because they are the cutest.

That's my Yoda

And this is Maya, but I never call her by that name.

Ok now onto the quilting stuff. I started quilting either at the end of 2009 or at the beginning of 2010.
This is were all the magic happens  :
I moved things a little but I'm still sewing in there.

I started blogging last year in November and I've met so many wonderful ladies so far !
I love participating in swaps too. I've been really lucky so far because I've had such wonderful partners !
You can see what I've made on my blog or on Flickr

My most popular post (aside from the Sew, Mama, Sew giveaway day) is the one about the Somerset Star.. I still love this pillow very much and it lives on my couch but I don't really use it since the pieces are hand sewn.

I also recently made one for Tiffany, one of the wonderful lady I was talking about.
(I hope you don't mind if I borrowed you're picture Tiff)

I'm going to show you just a few of my most recent projects ok ?

Sew Sew Modern Swap pillow
Modern She Made Swap 2

Pillow Talk Swap 9
I do make quilts too :) Don't worry. But pillows are so fun because they allow me to try something new that I wouldn't necessarily want to make in a whole quilt !

Now, onto the fun stuff - the giveaway.
I was allowed to choose what I wanted to to win and I picked a book !
If you win, I would love to know if you liked the book or not. And even though I'm not the kind of girl who likes to follow a pattern, quilting books are full of inspiration !

To enter the giveaway, umm tell me something about you. Anything !
If you are a follower, leave me a second comment (new or old).
The giveaway is open to everyone :)

And now, don't forget to look at those blogs from fellow "Québécois" (people who live in Quebec). I certainly will :)

Have a good day everyone and thank you to Carol again !!

This weekend

Well I've been quite productive I must say. And it feels good!  I haven't touched to my christmas presents just yet, but it'll come.

First, I finished a quilt I started in April 2010.2 and a half years ago. lol
The only reason why I finished it was because I wanted to sew but I don't have any WIP didn't want to start one so binding this quilt was easy.

It's made with some Amy Butler fabric, I don't even remember the name of the collection and I'm too lazy to look. It measures maybe 60"x at least 70" I guess.
If someone was interested in buying it, it's available and we can negociate :) (and I won't list it on Etsy).
For now, it's hanging on the wall in my living room and it will probably stay there until I can find something to do with it.

I also started and finished a pillow for the Sew Sew Modern swap.
It's quite simple but I love the colors and I think my partner will too !

Or maybe I'll keep it and make another one for my partner because it looks pretty good on my couch !

And I made my sister a bag the other day !
The pictures aren't good but it's the only ones I got..

It's the Sidekick tote pattern from Noodlehead. I've never made a bag and this one came together in about 3-4 hours. It was really easy to make and the directions are so easy to follow !
I'll probably make one for me (or the 241 tote, or both).

That's it for this past weekend ! And I don't think I'll have a lot of time to sew this week..
What did you make lately ??
