Blogger's Choice Bundle

Hi there ! LinkLinkI know it's been way too long since my last post. I'm sorry ! I've been really busy !
I promise I'll be back soon with pictures of my grandfather's quilt (which he loved!).
For now, Laura @Quokka Quilts is hosting a contest/giveaway along with the Fat Quarter Shop. The lucky winner will get a 15 half yard bundle !!! Isn't it amazing ?

What you need to do :

1. Go to The Fat Quarter Shop website and choose 12 coordinating prints and 3 solids from their selection.

2. Either a) create a blog entry about your set of fabrics; or b) if you don't have a blog, upload them somewhere they can be seen in one link - eg flickr, picasa, etc. You must include pictures of your fabrics. You can 'borrow' these from the FQS site. It would be very helpful to the judges if you could do a photo collage of your various prints.

Go back to Quokka's Blog and link your photo collage. You have until January 15th to enter.

Here is mine :

1. Sunny Happy Skies by Bella Blvd for Riley Blake Designs
2. Stitch Organic by Betz White for Robert Kaufman Fabrics
3. Sorbet by Michael Miller Fabrics
4. Secret Garden by Sandi Henderson for Michael Miller Fabrics
5. Outfoxed by Lizzy House for Andover Fabrics

One done, one to go.

Hi !

I said I'd come up with a tutorial yesterday, but I really need to finish my grandfather's quilt so this will have to wait. But I promise I'll do it !

In the meantime, I can show you a quilt I just finished for my mother's boyfriend.
It's from The Practical Guide to Patchwork from Elizabeth Hartman. It is the Kitchen Window pattern.
Thanks to some December sun for the good pictures :)

It's made out of the Bohemian Soul collection by Patricia Bravo. I love this collection !
I started it sometimes this summer and decided that I needed to finish it for Christmas. I started quilting last night at 8pm and I quilted for an hour. I continued this morning and now it's 2pm and it's quilted and binded. I just need to wash it :)

I want a good sewing machine for my birthday. Right now, I'm using my mom's. It's a Baby Lock Quest and I think it does a wonderful job. What kind of sewing machine do you own ? Do you like it ? What were your other options when you bought it ?
I feel like there are so many choices that I don't know where to start.

Sew, Mama, Sew Giveaway Winners

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who entered. I never thought I'd get 448 comments ! I read each and everyone of them. I answered to some of you, but not everyone. It would have been too time consuming, especially considering that I also had to study for my exams!
I wish everyone could win but it would cost me a fortune to send a prize to everyone !

So, last night at 5pm PST (which was 8pm for me), I picked two winners with Random.org

First was #29 which is Kelly who said "I've moved 17 times and move #18 is in a few months! This fact is more amazing because I'm only 31 years old." and #1 which is jmday who said "Hmmm random fact... I don't like to follow the crowd... well at least not without my own little twist. :)"

Both winners have been contacted and they already claimed their prize ! The fabric will be sent on monday (because the post doesn't work during the weekends anyway).

Now, I can never say again that number one never get picked by Mr. Random.

I have two questions for you. First is : how do you put numbers on the comments ? (luckily, the biggest number was 29. Imagine I had to count until 300 to find out who left this comment!) It could come in handy for the futur.
And then, I'd like to know how to close comments on a particular blog post. This too could be useful.

And a special thanks to everyone who decided to follow even though my blog was still brand new !

(To everyone who said there was no snow in their little corner of the world, here in Magog, we got some during the night ! Now, Christmas can happen!)

How to make a girl happy

There is only two ingredients :
1. The end of my very first semester ( I feel free ! No more homework and studying to think about for the next 3 weeks or so. Yayy !!)
2. New fabric

Isn't it the perfect mix ?

Let me show you what I'm talking about.

This is coming from onthegrain
I have to admit that I don't LOVE all the fabrics (only two that are not the kind of fabric I like), but it's ok. Maybe I'll be able to swap some eventually! And I bought this charm pack during the black friday sale.

Then I received this :

One of my block and some extra fabric.
Why the fabric ? We swapped :-) (a couple weeks ago, I ordered fabric from fabric.com and I received 2 yards and a half of one instead of the half I ordered so she offered to swap!)

Because I received all this, I'll be able to start the quilt I want to make to my grandfather (which is supposed to be a christmas present. Hopefully, I won't work too much next week)

I still don't know what to do. I've been looking for inspiration on Pinterest and Flickr for the last three weeks. I might just make something simple, maybe half square triangle or log cabin.
Any ideas ?
Keep in mind, it's for a men so no stars/flowers/swirls...

Are you giving handmade presents for christmas ? What are you making ?
Have a good weekend and I'll be back on monday or tuesday with a tutorial !

Hi there !

Last night, Internet decided not to work. The company that provides us had major problems so I couldn't blog/pin/stalk other blogs. Nothing was working. What do you do when you studied all day and Internet doesn't work ? Sew of course !!
I ended up finishing my [3x6]Sampler Quilt Mini Bee. I am very proud of myself for finishing them.
Here they are :

The idea came from Jolene (I don't know her, her name's in her profile) @ Happy Modern Quilt.
It's the second from the top right. I am probably not the creator of this block, but would anyone be interested in a tutorial ?
If nobody is, I won't make it, but if some of you are, it will be a pleasure !

I need help. I bought this fabric a couple weeks ago and I can't decide whether it's purple or pink.
What do you think ?

Even though the one on the left looks more purple than the one on the right, the color of the background is the same when you look at the "reel" fabric.
I'm asking because I wanted to use it in my bee blocks but I didn't know if the color would work.

Do you participate in a bee ? If so, which one ?

I've got another question for you : does anybody else have problems with Google Reader ? I suscribe to blogs and sometimes, they don't show up. And when I unsucribe from others and they are still there the next day.

Thank you !

Just a quick message to say thank you !
Thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway and to those of you who think my blog is worthy of your time ! I'll make sure to update as often as possible to satisfy you.

I never thought I'd get such a great response ! I'm honored :)

I'll leave you with some pictures (because a post without pictures is a little boring no?)
First, my babies :

And then fabric, cause who doesn't like it ?

The (not so) Easy Empire Waist Top

Tomorrow, my niece is going to be baptized so I decided to make a little something for her. You know, a little last minute gift ! My sister-in-law also know how to sew so I know she'll apreciate this gift. So i decided to try the Easy Empire Waist Top from the Little Stiched for Littles Ones by Amy Butler. I remebered that I read that her patterns were hard to follow and all but it's all I had on hand!
Making the bodise was pretty easy. The problems started when I had to attach the trim to the bodice. My pieces were on the wrong side and it took me about half an hour to figure it out :S
Then I had problems with the sleeves. I just tried and ended up making my own thing cause it was like 11pm...I was searching the net for some instructions. I just decided to sleep on it so I left it there for the night. This morning, I tried to attach the sleeves to the top. It went ok ! And for the bodice, it went fine too but all in all, I think it took me 8 hours to complete it ! But you know, I'm happy and I like how it turned.
Now, let me introduce you to the Not-So-Easy Empire Top :
(sorry for bad pictures, it's dark outside!)

I hope she likes it !
Have you tried some Amy Butler pattern ? If so, which one ?

Sewing for girls

So these are my favorites thise week. I can spend hours on Pinterest looking for ideas and inspiration. Do you have a Pinterest board ?

I haven't been sewing much lately and I miss it ! I need to make 6 blocks for my bee mates and a quilt for my grandfather (I'm still waiting for more fabric). I'll have about 10 days to make a big lap quilt ! And I still need to buy christmas present for my mother and grandmother !

Are all your christmas present ready and wrapped ?

Quilting Bee and other things

So a couple weeks ago, I started showing interest in quilting bees but I wasn't too sure because I thought I wasn't good enough. I started my first quilt two years ago and finished it last summer so let say I've only been quilting for a year. And what I made was not hard to do, I didn't choose difficult patterns. So anyway, I found the [3x6] Sampler Quilt Mini Bee and it happened to be the last day for registration so I though "this must be a sign. I need to jump in !" so I filled my form and got in ! In this bee, you are paired with 5 other women (or men, but there's none in our hive) and each one of us make 5 blocks (the same one but with different colors). We have 2 months and a half to make them. So if you don't like the experience, you're not enrolled for a complete year (like in regular bees). Anyway, this is the block I made :
It's made with a paper piecing technique. It was my first time paper piecing and it took me a couple tries before I got it right but I love the result (my bee mates too ! Yay !).
I wouldn't make a quilt out of it, but I can definitely make 5. I used this template to make the block but I made it bigger (170%) because it was tiny tiny !

Also, a couple days ago, I made my sister a laptop sleeve.

I used this tutorial to make it. I made a quilted one instead and when it came to the zipper, I had to refer to another tutorial, because I did not understand her's. It's not my most fabulous zipper, but it's ok and my sister won't even notice. I'm not planning on making another one soon !

Do you participate in a Quilting Bee ? If so, which one ?

My kitties !

Two days ago, I said I'd present you my two cats.So ladies first :

This is Maya, she's about a year old. She is the most cuddly cat I know. She loves to snuggle on me and then she starts to purr really loud. You can actually hear her from the other side of the room. She also respond when I talk to her ! Anyway, she's cute and I love her ! My sister and I got her at the animal shelter after my first cat died (I never cried that hard... you can ask my mom!)

And then mister Yoda :

He is not that much of a cool cat but I love him anyway. My uncle found him outside a year and a half ago and he couldn't keep him because they have a dog and my aunt and two cousins are allergic so I kept him.
He hurt him two days ago and now, he has this on his chest :

I know, it's disgusting. It also cost 400$. Damn cat ! Just before christmas !
He's fine now and that's the most important thing !

So there you go, you now know my two babies :)

Hello Blogging World !

I've been meaning to start a blog for a while now and tonight is the night ! My biggest problem was to find the right name. It came to me yesterday...
So let start by introducing me. I'm Marika, a 22 years old girl living in the lovely province of Quebec, in Canada. I have two cats, I'll introduce them later and you'll probably see a lot of pictures here !
I started quilting about a year and a half ago. I had never touch a sewing machine (or barely) before I made this quilt.

By the way, this is Yoda, my little boy. He love's to join me in bed in the middle of the night. I wonder why I'm so tired sometimes!

Besides sewing, I love to read (even though I don't really have time with school), I know how to knit and crochet. I'm addicted to Pinterest and if I could, I'd try all the DIY projects I sew over there.
Recently, I joined my first quilting bee and I'm really excited ! It's the 3x6 Sampler Quilt Mini Bee on Flickr. I tried paper piecing for the first time and I am pretty happy with the result !
I also love to travel. My boyfriend and I plan to move to Europe (maybe the south of France) where I've lived for four years when I was younger. I love every minute of it and I visited so many countries ! I also like to cook, especially deserts/big cakes but only when it's for a lot of people. I'm not going to bake on a regular monday night you know.
Oh and something very important : I love kids and I want lots of them (ok, not that much, just 4) in a very close futur (I hope!) I can't wait to have a big, round and moving belly and then have a tiny little baby to love and raise.

I'm also studying to become a teacher for children with special needs (I'm leaning towards intellectual disability, but nothing is certain at this point because it is only my first year) and I love it !

I think thats it for tonigh !
I hope I won't forget that blog and I'll try to update it as often as possible.
Thanks for joining me !
